Aly Bellagha was born in Tunis in 1924, he is a Tunisian professor, designer, painter and engraver. he is a member of the artisitc movment of the School of Tunis.
Bellagha comes from an artist background, his parents were artisan from the medina of Tunis, he left to Paris to study drawing, engraving and ceramics at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, attended the engraving workshop of professor René Jaudon, took decoration classes at the Claude Bernard high school in Paris and studied at the Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Tunis.
In 1953, Bellagha organized his first solo exhibition beofre exhibiting regulary, both in Tunis and aborad. From 1956 he taught drawing at the Collège Sadikia for four years. He later with his wife Jacqueline Guilbert, opened an art gallery of anitques and crafts in the center of Tunis.
Aly Bellagha was passionate about ancient objects and the world of crafts. He has a modernist approach to the development of artistic professions. He therefore revalues the Arab-Muslim heritage to give it modern accents and re-enhances the Tunisian artistic heritage, in particular the use of wood, stone, copper, wool, leather and silver.
A specialist in expertise, paintings, glassware and furniture, he is passionate about all forms of art: painting, ceramics, sculpture, restoration and decoration. He works with wood to create still life compositions. His drawings are brightly colored.
In 2003, Aly Bellagha received the National Prize for Plastic Arts and contributed to the creation of the Dar Gmach ecomuseum in the village of Takrouna.
He passed away in May 2006.
